How to Install Cabinet Hinges for Clean Door Gaps

A cabinet door can be perfectly made and still look amateur if the gaps wander, the door rubs, or the reveal changes every time it closes. When you install cabinet hinges, the hinge itself matters, but accurate layout matters more. A few measured reference lines, a square cup bore, and controlled adjustment will give a basic cabinet door the crisp, even fit associated with professional work.

This guide focuses on concealed European-style cup hinges, the most common choice for modern face-frame and frameless cabinets. They offer three-way adjustment, clean appearance, and reliable soft-close options. Traditional butt hinges install differently, but the same fundamentals apply: establish the door position first, drill carefully, and adjust only after every screw is secure.

Start With the Right Hinge for the Cabinet

Do not choose a hinge based only on its appearance. The cabinet construction and door style determine the hinge you need. For a frameless cabinet, the door mounts directly to the cabinet side. For a face-frame cabinet, the mounting plate may attach to the frame or use a face-frame adapter.

Door overlay is the next decision. Full-overlay doors cover nearly all of the cabinet side or face frame. Half-overlay doors share a center stile with a neighboring door. Inset doors sit flush inside the cabinet opening and demand tighter layout tolerances. A full-overlay hinge will not produce an inset installation simply by adjusting the screws.

Most concealed hinges use a 35 mm cup hole, which is about 1-3/8 inches. Compact hinges for face-frame cabinets and smaller hinges for narrow doors can vary, so check the manufacturer’s boring pattern before drilling. Also confirm the hinge opening angle. A standard 105-degree or 110-degree hinge works for many kitchen and shop cabinets, while corner cabinets, pull-out trays, and interior drawers may need specialty hinges with wider angles or restricted opening.

For a typical cabinet door up to about 40 inches tall, two hinges are usually enough. Add a third hinge for taller, wider, solid-wood, glass-panel, or unusually heavy doors. Four hinges may be justified on full-height pantry doors. More hinges are not automatically better, but they reduce stress on each mounting point and help prevent sag over time.

Tools That Make Hinge Installation Accurate

A tape measure alone is not enough for consistent cabinet work. Use a combination square or quality layout square to mark lines from the door edge, and use a sharp pencil or marking knife for precise reference marks. A self-centering hinge bit helps keep pilot holes centered in the hinge cup and mounting plate holes.

For 35 mm concealed hinges, a carbide-tipped Forstner bit is the practical choice. It cuts a flat-bottomed, clean-edged hole that supports the hinge cup correctly. A drill press gives the best control for multiple doors, especially in a cabinet shop, but a cordless drill works well when paired with a drill guide or a dedicated concealed-hinge jig.

You will also need a drill/driver, appropriate driver bit, spring clamps, a straightedge, and shims. Keep a small torpedo level nearby for cabinet installation, but do not use it as the final authority on door gaps. The doors should be aligned to the cabinet box and each other. If the cabinet itself is slightly out of level, forcing the doors level can make the reveals look worse.

Wear safety glasses when drilling cup holes. Forstner bits produce chips quickly, and a bit that catches near a door edge can damage the workpiece or pull the drill unexpectedly. Secure the door on a stable bench instead of holding it with one hand.

Lay Out the Door Before You Drill

Place the door face down on a protected, flat work surface. Mark the hinge locations from the top and bottom edges. A common starting point is 3 to 4 inches from each end of the door, measured to the center of the hinge cup. Match the locations across doors that share an opening so the hinges and door lines look intentional.

Next, establish the cup setback. On many 35 mm hinges, the edge of the cup hole sits about 3/16 inch to 1/4 inch from the door edge. That dimension affects how the hinge moves and how much adjustment range remains after installation. Follow the hinge specification if one is provided, particularly on thick doors, narrow rails, or doors with routed profiles.

Mark a centerline across the door at each hinge location. Then mark the cup center using the specified setback. Measure twice before boring. A cup hole drilled too close to the edge can break through the door edge; one drilled too far inward may prevent the door from closing properly or limit overlay adjustment.

Bore a Clean, Controlled Cup Hole

Set the drilling depth before the bit touches the door. Most 35 mm hinge cups need a hole roughly 1/2 inch deep, but door thickness and hinge design can change that. The goal is to leave enough material beneath the cup for strength. On a standard 3/4-inch cabinet door, drilling through the face is an expensive mistake.

Use a depth stop on a drill press, drill guide, or the bit itself. Make a test bore in scrap material of the same thickness before drilling finished doors. This is especially worthwhile with painted MDF, veneered plywood, or expensive hardwood, where a chipped rim or blowout is difficult to hide.

Keep the drill perpendicular to the door. Start at moderate speed until the rim cutters establish the circle, then continue with steady pressure. Clear chips as needed. After drilling, press the hinge cup into the hole. It should sit flat without forcing it. If it rocks, inspect the bottom of the bore for chips or a shallow spot.

Drive the hinge cup screws by hand with a drill/driver set to a low clutch setting, then finish snugly. Overdriving screws strips particleboard and MDF quickly. If you are working with hardwood, drill pilot holes first.

Install Cabinet Hinges on the Cabinet Box

With the hinges mounted to the door, attach the mounting plates to the cabinet. The most efficient method is to use a cabinet hinge jig or a story stick that transfers the hinge locations from door to box. For one-off work, hold the door in position with shims underneath and mark the plate locations through the hinge arms.

Maintain a consistent reveal around the opening. For many overlay doors, a 1/8-inch gap between adjacent doors and between doors and drawer fronts is a dependable starting point. Inset doors often use a smaller, more controlled reveal, but they need room for seasonal wood movement and reliable closing.

Support the door at its final height while fastening the mounting plates. A stack of spacer blocks or cabinet shims is more reliable than trying to hold a heavy door in position while driving screws. Attach the top plate first, then the bottom plate, and confirm the door swings without rubbing before fully tightening the hardware.

For face-frame cabinets, verify that the hinge plate or adapter is designed for the frame width. Narrow frames can leave little room for screws, and driving too close to an inside edge can split the wood. Use the correct screw length so it holds securely without penetrating the cabinet interior or door face.

Adjust the Hinges One Direction at a Time

Concealed hinges are designed to correct small errors, not rescue poor layout. Most have three adjustments: side-to-side changes the gap between doors, height adjustment raises or lowers the door, and depth adjustment moves the door closer to or farther from the cabinet.

Start with height. Align the top and bottom edges of neighboring doors, then tighten the mounting plate screws. Next, use side-to-side adjustment to establish even vertical gaps. Finally, set the depth so the door closes flush and does not bind against the cabinet or face frame.

Make small changes, usually no more than a quarter turn at a time, and close the door after each change. Adjusting one hinge can affect the other, especially on tall doors. When a door appears twisted, adjust the top and bottom hinges differently rather than moving both screws the same amount.

If a soft-close door will not close fully, do not assume the damper is defective. Check for a cup hole that is too shallow, a mounting plate in the wrong position, a drawer front that protrudes, or a door gap that is too tight. On small or lightweight doors, some soft-close hinges also need their damping switch reduced or disengaged.

Fix Common Hinge Problems Before They Become Damage

A door that sags after installation often has loose screws, too few hinges, or mounting screws installed in weak material. Remove stripped screws, fill the holes with a suitable wood repair method, let the repair cure if required, and reinstall using properly sized screws. Simply driving a larger screw into damaged particleboard can crack the material and may not hold.

A door that rubs only at one corner usually needs side-to-side adjustment or a minor height correction. A door that springs open may be contacting the frame, drawer front, or adjacent door before the hinge reaches its closed position. Find the contact point instead of forcing the hinge adjustment beyond its useful range.

Before calling the job finished, open and close every door several times. Check the reveals under normal room lighting, tighten mounting screws, and confirm that pulls or knobs do not collide. Clean, consistent gaps are the detail people notice first, and they are earned with patient setup rather than rushed drilling.

A good hinge installation gives you one more advantage: future service is simple. Keep the hinge brand and overlay specification recorded with the project, because replacing a damaged door or hinge years later is far easier when the original boring pattern and hardware style are known.
